Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise shocked the world after announcing they were set to divorce after six years of marriage, but it appears everything was not as it seemed.

According to the former couple's legal papers, which were released yesterday (October 3rd), they actually parted ways six months before confirming they were no longer an item.

Obtained by the National Enquirer, the documents revealed their union had "broken down irretrievably for a period of at least six months immediately preceding".

The legal papers, which are dated August 17th 2012 and signed by New York State Supreme Court Judge Matthew F Cooper, also include the specifics regarding the custody of their six-year-old daughter Suri.

News of the split came after the pair were wed in a luxurious ceremony in Italy during 2006 - however, it appears they were officially married in a civil ceremony in Los Angeles later that year.

Weeks after announcing their split, it was confirmed Holmes would gain sole custody of their daughter.
